Supporting Trans Elders Project (STEP)

with a focus on

Transmasculine and Transmen

STEP-Logo_Alternative.png

As transmen age, they face unique challenges that are often overlooked in mainstream elder care and LGBTQ+ support networks. STEP aims to create a comprehensive support system tailored specifically for elder transmen, ensuring they have access to affirming healthcare, community connections, and resources that promote dignity, safety, and well-being.

Through advocacy, education, and direct support, STEP seeks to improve the quality of life for elder transmen, ensuring they age with dignity, security, and community.

Key Issues

01

Healthcare Accessibility & Competency

Many elder trans men encounter medical providers unfamiliar with their specific needs, leading to inadequate or discriminatory care. STEP will advocate for trans-inclusive healthcare training and provide resources to help individuals find competent providers.

Social Isolation & Community Building

Aging can be isolating, especially for those who have lost connections due to transitions or social stigma. Creating peer networks, mentorship programs, and in-person/virtual support groups will foster community and belonging.

03

Legal & Financial Security

Many trans elders face barriers in legal documentation, financial planning, and workplace discrimination. STEP will facilitate guidance on updating legal records, accesing retirement benefits, and navigating workplace protections.

04

Mental Health & Wellbeing

STEP will facilitate access to trans-affirming therapists, wellness programs, and resilience-building initiatives to address depression, anxiety, and trauma.

05

Housing & Safety

Addressing access to safe, affirming senior housing and advocating against discrimination in assisted living and elder care facilities will be a priority.
